NON-LEAGUE is in mourning following the tragic death of Matlock Town midfielder Jordan Sinnott.

The 25-year-old, son of former Altrincham manager Lee, passed away just before 7pm last night having been taken to Sheffield’s Northern General Hospital and put on a life support machine following a serious assault in Retford town centre on Friday evening.

Matlock’s Northern Premier League fixture at MickMatlock, leover Sports yesterday was postponed when players received the news that his condition was critical.

Alfreton Town, who Sinnott left in August to join

also postponed their National League North match with Gateshead.

Nottinghamshire Police have launched a murder investigation following two incidents that occurred on Friday night in connection with Sinnott’s death. A 27-year-old man remains in police custody.

Officers attended the Dominie Cross public house in Grove Street following a report of a group of up to eight men and women having been involved in a disturbance in the pub car park just after 11.25pm.

Police were later called to assist ambulance crews

who were attempting to treat Sinnott after he was found unconscious with a suspected fractured skull following a subsequent incident at around 2am in the town’s Market Place.

A 27-year old man sustained a suspected broken nose during the incident, while a 44-year-old man received a suspected broken jaw.

Sinnott began his career at Huddersfield Town and had loan spells at Altrincham and Bury, before signing for his dad’s side in the National League.

In 2016-17, he helped FC Halifax Town to promotion via the National League North play-offs, scoring a penalty in their semi-final shootout victory over Salford City.

Sinnott scored a hattrick in his final game for Matlock during their 5-0 win over Basford United last week. The club led the emotional tributes for the popular midfielder, saying: “You weren’t just a footballer, you were our friend and our brother.

“You gave us incredible memories and scored your first career hat-trick in your final game for the club. Rest easy Jordan, we love, miss and will never forget you.”

Alfreton added: “Jordan was a model footballer and an exceptional talent during his time at the Impact Arena and had a close affinity with both the manager, assistant and the players he took the field with.”

Team-mate Ben Gordon wrote: “Can’t even begin to put it into words. Absolutely heartbroken. Rest in peace Sinbad, you will always be in our thoughts.”
