ADAMS ON SONG TO FRUSTRATE TERRORS
TOOTING & Mitcham United slipped out of the Isthmian South Central Division play-off places after being held at struggling Staines Town.
Klajdi Cani put hosts Staines in front with an 18th-minute penalty before Jamarie Brissett’s goal levelled matters at Wheatsheaf Park.
The second half was full of chances for Tooting but they could not convert and had to settle for a point.
Staines threatened from the outset with Cani sending a free-kick narrowly wide. But he made no mistake when presented with his next opportunity.
After Glenn Yala was brought down in the box, Cani stepped up and confidently slotted the ball into the bottom corner.
However, some scrappy defending allowed Brissett to get Tooting back on level terms on the half-hour mark.
Staines responded well after the equaliser as Emmanuel Osei-Asomah’s shot from the edge of the box whistled over the bar.
The hosts then had keeper Jacob Adams to thank as he pulled off a superb stop to keep Tooting at bay.
Adams was having an impressive afternoon as he produced a string of fine saves in the second period.
The game became stretched in the final 15 minutes as both teams searched for a winner.
Staines had a penalty appeal turned down as nothing could separate the two sides.
The result saw Tooting drop to sixth, one point behind fifthplaced Waltham Abbey, who overtook them after a 5-2 win over Northwood.
Staines’ draw ended a run of three straight league defeats and moved them up to 17th, three points clear of the drop zone.
