CURRIE BOYS ARE ON FIRE!

- By Machel Hewitt

DARREN Currie hailed his Barnet bravehearts after making it seven games unbeaten in the National League.

Goals from strike duo Josh Walker and Simeon Akinola sandwiched a Josh Rees effort to ensure the three points headed back to north London at the expense of promotion hopefuls Bromley.

“I thought we were outstanding today,” Currie beamed. “All my players, from the starting eleven to the subs, contributed today. The size of our heart was incredible and every single one of my players stood up.

“We looked a real threat on the counter attack, we had a bit of rustiness to our game in the first 10 minutes having not played for two weeks but as the game progressed we tidied up our passing going forward and worked two very good goals.”

Bromley had started the match the better side and could have gone in front twice inside the opening 10 minutes.

First, Michael Cheek forced a smart save from Scott Loach after the ball fell to him in the penalty area before Loach bettered himself with a fantastic parried stop to deny Rees’ volley.

Barnet took a while to run off the rustiness but after Cheye Alexander tested Ryan Huddart, it was they who took the lead mid-way through the first half.

Walker seized on a mistake by Chris Bush and ran unimpeded into the penalty area before slotting calmly past Huddart.

Bromley worked their way back into the game and pulled level just before the break – Rees swivelling on a loose ball to crash a strike into the corner of Loach’s net.

The second half was short on quality but it might have been different for Bromley had Joe Kizzi’s strike from a knock down not been deflected inches wide.

And Barnet were to punish their hosts for that miss 10 minutes after the restart – Akinola reacting quickest to a cross to poke beyond Huddart and score at the second attempt.

With the goal advantage, Barnet were able to see the game out with a minimum fuss. Rees saw a side-foot effort roll just wide of the post with Loach beaten but that was the best Bromley could offer.

Defeat was Bromley’s third on the bounce and boss Neil Smith did not hold back in his assessment.

He moaned: “Teams arent having to work hard to beat us right now, we’re beating ourselves. It’s clear we now need to go back to basics.

“Perhaps we’re getting above ourselves a bit and now it’s about everyone from the forwards to the keeper everyone has to go back to basics.”
