STONES HIT SEVEN FOR A ROMAN THUMPING
WEALDSTONE recorded their big- gest ever National League South win with a dismantling of nearest challengers Bath City.
Dean Brennan’s men outclassed the Romans, who suffered their heaviest defeat since September 2003, losing their 12-game unbeaten run.
Brennan was delighted: “We just continued on from the standards we set at Havant. We were outstanding there and continued it on.
“We try to raise the bar; we demand a lot from those players. Every player worked his socks off.”
The Stones showed their intentions from the off as they pressed City into mistakes, eventually forcing an opener on 14 minutes.
Aston Oxborough’s freekick was only headed out as far as Billy Clifford, who struck low from 20 yards inside Ryan Clarke’s righthand post.
The lead was soon doubled. A Daniel Green setpiece carved open City and Frankie Artus volleyed into his own net under pressure from Moses Emmanuel.
Clifford was denied by Clarke after the midfielder dispossessed Dan Ball with ease, and the Romans stopper got fingertips on Michee Efete’s angled drive as the former Bath man looked to extend his recent goalscoring form.
Instead Connor Stevens got in on the act from the resulting corner. More hapless defending from Jerry
Gill’s men allowed him to nod home from six yards despite Clarke’s efforts.
The Stones didn’t let up after the break as they harried and steamrollered their crestfallen opponents. Dennon Lewis added a fourth on 54 minutes, thumping into the roof of the net from 10 yards.
Lewis notched another seven minutes later. More dalliance at the back was picked upon by Clifford, who laid off for Lewis inside the box. The winger slipped when shooting but still did enough to wrongfoot Clarke .
The winger turned provider for Wealdstone’s sixth. Green followed up on his goal against Havant last week with another tidy finish, a low curler from 20 yards out.
A magnificent seventh arrived with ten minutes remaining, and Clifford was involved again.
This time his shot was parried by Clarke and Michael Phillips, who’d only been on the pitch for three minutes, tapped in the rebound to round off the scoring for the Royals.
This stunning display left the majority of those inside Grosvenor Vale bouncing. Conversely, Bath boss Jerry Gill was furious at his team’s capitulation:
“That looked like first in the league against a side about to be relegated.
“At the moment I feel physically sick.
“I’m really upset with that performance.”
