NOMADS JUST KEEP MARCHING ONWARDS

- By Carl Field

CONNAH’S Quay Nomads remain on course for a third straight JD Welsh Cup final after putting eight past Afan Lido without reply on Deeside to reach the last eight again.

Mike Wilde and Michael Bakare both filled their boots with hat-tricks against the JD Cymru South visitors while skipper George Horan and Jamie Insall completed the rout.

Holders The New Saints, who beat the Nomads in last season’s final to lift the trophy for a seventh time, are still on for number eight after cruising past Aberystwyth Town 4-0 at Park Hall.

Ryan Brobbel and Danny Redmond put Scott Ruscoe’s side in the driving seat before Dean Ebbe and Greg Draper also netted in the second half.

Joining them in the last eight are JD Cymru North leaders Prestatyn Town who got the better of their South counterparts Swansea University.

The tie at Sketty Lane was settled by Jordan Davies’ goal six minutes into the second half.

Meanwhile a second half double from Jamie Reed sent Cefn Druids through 2-0 against Pontardawe Town. Reed broke the deadlock from the penalty spot on 49 minutes before sealing the deal three minutes from time.

Newtown booked their place in the quarter-finals thanks to a 4-1 defeat of Rhyl at Latham Park.

Nick Rushton’s early opener for Newtown was cancelled out by the visitors’ Tom Creamer – but second half goals from Ian Sheridan, Craig Williams and George Harry ensured it would be the Robins going through.

There was a dramatic finish at Bryntirion where Eliot Evans’ last minute winner took Cardiff Met through 2-1 against Penybont.

Just a minute earlier Nathan Wood had equalised for Penybont, cancelling out Evans’ 22nd minute penalty for Met, who played for nearly an hour with 10 men after Mael Davies was sent off.

The numbers were evened up on 72 minutes when Michael George saw red for Penybont – who would finish with nine men after Owain Warlow also went late on for a second booking.

Elsewhere Caernarfon Town sailed through 4-0 at Ammanford thanks to Sion Bradley, Noah Edwards and a brace from Darren Thomas, while Flint Town United knocked out Colwyn Bay 3-2.

Richie Foulkes, Alex Titchiner and Mark Cadwallader grabbed the goals for Flint who had already dumped out Bala Town.

Julian Williams and Michael Bryant found the net for Colwyn Bay but their run is over.

With Swansea University in cup action, Haverfordwest County went back to the top of Cymru South after a 3-0 success at STM Sports.

Marcus Griffiths found the net in each half with Tim Hicks also on the scoresheet for the Bluebirds to earn a win that takes them two points back above the students.
