OLLIE’S REBELS READY TO YELL

- By David Richardson

OLLIE PEARCE has put his and Worthing’s success down to a simple attribute: hard work.

The 24-year-old striker is helping fire the Rebels to Step 2 and has played a key part in their extraordinary run to the BetVictor Isthmian League summit.

Boss Adam Hinshelwood has led his team to nine wins from their last 11 league games to power past title rivals Folkestone Invicta. “It’s going really well, we’re on a good run, top of the league, and still in the cups,” Pearce told The NLP.

“Last year we got into a good position and nearly into the play-offs. There’s been some changes to the squad since but we work our socks off in training. With the hard put in, we probably deserve to be where we are.

“We were not saying at the start of the season we were going to win the league but when you get on a run like this it helps things massively and makes it a lot easier.” Pearce joined the club last season from local rivals Bognor Regis Town where he made his debut at the age of 17 and went on to become a fans’ favourite with memorable performances in their promotion from Step 3 in 2016-17 and their run to the FA Trophy semi-finals the previous year.

He has fired six goals in as many games to take his tally to 11 for the season in the league – and knows he has to stay at his best to keep his place.

Headache

“We’ve got a massive squad, three or four players could play in any position, it’s probably a bit of headache for the manager to choose a team every week,” he said.

“I’ve come into the side and scored some goals. If you play well and score, then you keep your place.

“Bognor is a fantastic club. I had five or six great years there but the set-up at Worthing is amazing.

“Everything is done in a professional manner and a little bit more, maybe, to set up for the future.

“When I signed the club wanted to get out of this league in the next couple of years.

“If we do get promoted, and there is a long way to go, I feel like the club is set up to do well in the next league.”
