TOP SPOT BY HISTON
AVELEY’S pursuit of league leaders Heybridge Swifts took a disappointing twist as they were held to a frustrating draw against a determined and disciplined Histon, who refused to throw in the towel when it mattered most.
Histon themselves have plenty to play for this season; they are chasing a play-off place and they dug deep in the face of one of the division’s in-form sides.
Aveley will be left annoyed by their inability to convert chances and turn pressure into points in a game they could have done with taking all three points from.
It wasn’t to be though as Histon showed their obvious quality when it mattered most and produced a workmanlike and disciplined performance against a very good side.
There was a late change to Histon’s starting lineup with Simon Swinton starting in place of James Chivers.
The disruption seemed to do little to affect the fast start Histon enjoyed as Ed Rolph scored after only nine minutes.
He took full advantage of a mix up in the Aveley defence to score the game’s opening goal and turn the fixture on its head.
A flurry of yellow cards then followed as both sides struggled to get a grip of the fixture and make their mark in the game.
On 45 minutes the game turned again as Aveley were awarded a penalty.
Shad Ngandu scored from the spot after Histon were penalised for a handball from a free-kick.
Almost 200 people attended the fixture but they were left disaapointed as neither team could force a winner.
