Egan double seals history for the Boyds

- By Ned Payne

BOSS Dan Langdon guided Bitton to the FA Vase quarter-finals for the first time in club history before labelling victory over Sutton Common Rovers as “surreal”.

A goal in each half from striker Josh Egan, including a stunning free-kick, proved enough with Adam Allen’s late effort only a consolation for Sutton.

Bitton reached the last 16 in 2004 and 2009, losing to Colne and Glossop North End, respectively.

But there was to be no such heartache this time, leaving Langdon jubilant following a fifth home triumph in the competition this season. “We fancied our chances but to actually get the win is a bit surreal,” said Langdon.

“Making history was always one of our objectives and it is a massive achievement.

“It was a superb free-kick by Josh. He’s scored a few of those for us now so as good as it was, I wasn’t surprised!”

Bitton broke the deadlock in spectacular style. The hosts earned a free-kick some 25 yards out and Egan unleashed a powerful curling strike which kissed the left post on its way in.

Matt Farrell attempted a reply but headed off target, while Allen later smashed wildly over when well-placed.

Moments into the second period, the lead was nearly extended but Sutton keeper Michael Eacott blocked from Karim Rendall.

Seventeen minutes from time, Bitton tightened their grip.

Joe McClennan won possession and Rendall sent in a low cross which Egan tucked away at the far post.

Sutton were handed a lifeline when striker Phil Page was felled by Rob Brown and a penalty was given.

Page slammed the spot-kick against the top of the bar and the ball looped into the danger zone, with Allen bundling into the net in the resultant chaos.

However, Bitton held on for victory.
