Sports leave it late to level up

- By Dill Butcher

CHARLIE WALKER smashed home a controversial last gasp equaliser for plucky Sports to deny Weymouth victory.

The win had been in sight for the Terras before the leveller after skipper Jake McCarthy fired in a free-kick eight minutes from time to make it 2-1.

But for all their first half dominance the Terras still managed to go in at the break a goal behind after Greg Luer latched on to a terrific defence-splitting pass from Kane Wills and cooly fire beyond Calum Ward just before the halfhour mark.

The hosts had registered seven attempts over the first 45 minutes but, crucially, only one had found the target. That was from the league’s player of the month for January, Abdulai Baggie, who saw his lukewarm effort grabbed at the second attempt by Franco Ravizzoli on 17 minutes.

However, Baggie fared much better after the break and it was his curling 30-yard drive as he cut inside from the left that brought the hosts back into the game, his shot flying inside the far post ten minutes after the restart.

Borough continued to get bodies in the way of a number of shots but it appeared to be only a matter of time before the Terras would get a deserved winner.

So when skipper McCarthy stroked home a stunning free-kick that beat the despairing dive of Ravizzoli from 25 yards with just ten minutes remaining, few would have imagined anything but a home victory.
