NOMADS ON TOP IN RACE FOR THE TITLE

- By Carl Field

IT’S now advantage Connah’s

Quay Nomads in the race for the JD Cymru Premier title. Andy Morrison’s men went a point clear at the top after a thumping 4-0 home win over Caernarfon

Town on Deeside – and go above champions The New Saints, who were held 1-1 at Bala Town.

The latest results also sets things up nicely for the showdown between the Nomads and TNS next Friday night, when a Connah’s Quay win would take them four points clear with seven matches to play. It would also present a genuine opportunity to dethrone TNS, who have won the title for the past eight seasons.

Skipper George Horan gave the Nomads the perfect start after two minutes, heading home Danny Holmes’s cross from the right.

They doubled their lead and again it was Horan on the scoresheet as he scored a half-volley.

Craig Curran added a third on when he raced away to score before Michael Bakare netted with a piledriver six minutes from time.

TNS had to settle for a point at Maes Tegid. It was Bala who took an early lead when Aeron Edwards put through his own net in the sixth minute after Henry Jones’s ball in.

The visitors were level just before the hour mark when Chris Marriott’s attempt on goal was handled inside the box, with Ryan Brobbel stepping up to score.

The other scheduled Championship Conference game yesterday as Latham Park between

Newtown and Barry fell foul of the weather. The Play-Off Conference clashes between Carmarthen Town and Cardiff Met and

Cefn Druids and Penybont were both postponed.

Aberystwyth Town moved 11 points clear of the bottom two after winning 5-3 at home against

Airbus UK Broughton. Touray Sisay helped himself to a hattrick to inspire Aber while Marc Williams was also at the double.

Kristian Platt replied for Airbus along with two late Oliver Lanceley efforts but they remain two points from safety.

Swansea University moved four points clear at the top of JD Cymru South with a 3-0 defeat of

Goytre United at Sketty Lane. Will Toms scored in each half either side of skipper Adam Orme finding the net and stretches their lead further on Haverfordwest County, who had their scheduled clash at Taffs Well postponed.

Kyle Copp and Zac Brown were at the double for Llanelli Town in a 5-2 win at Ammanford. Jordan Davies got the Reds’ other goal with Luke Borrelli and Tristan Jenkins replying.

Pontypridd Town and Cwmamman United drew 1-1, with Ben Miles levelling on 86 minutes to cancel out Tyrrell Webbe’s opener for Pontypridd only four minutes earlier.

Storm Dennis wreaked havoc with the rest of the programme as all other matches in JD Cymru South – and the entire JD Cymru North fixture list – were off.
