The Non-League Football Paper

IT’S THE WORST SEASON EVER!

- Kevin Sturmey – Taunton Town chief executive

WE didn’t see any issues here why we couldn’t have staged yesterday’s game with Merthyr Town but that has been taken out of our hands. We’ve got a big enough ground, there’s plenty of room to move around, plenty of seating and standing.

Whether the Southern League knows something we don’t, I don’t know, it just seems strange that some leagues are off and others aren’t. I don’t get it!

We’d have been absolutely fine to play the Merthyr game. It would have been helpful if a decision had been made earlier, 9am or 10am. It’s frustrating it’s happened on a Friday afternoon. We had ordered programmes, luckily our printers delayed and delayed and we managed to stop it at 3pm to prevent any more money being wasted.

Our pitch had been marked so that line paint has been wasted. Also people’s time, Non-League clubs are run by volunteers and we don’t just sit around waiting for calls and emails. None of us are any of the wiser why we’re off and other leagues aren’t.

It’s the worst season we’ve ever had because we’ve not played because of the weather and cup draws for ten weeks out of about 32. This is going to be 11, maybe 12. That’s an absolute killer. From a football point of view we will make a loss this year because you don’t make the money you would on a Saturday, on a Tuesday.

It’s been a negotiating year for me trying to tie up deals. We’re lucky we don’t have any external debt but every year you have liabilities that you’ve got to meet. It makes it much harder when you don’t have regular cash flow.

This sort of thing makes you realise how vulnerable we all are. We’ve got other sources of income but they don’t always come in when you want them.
