SEASON MUST BE GIVEN A CHANCE

- By Matt Badcock

CHESTER’S Anthony Johnson says the last eight months can’t just count for nothing.

Johnson, joint-boss alongside Bernard Morley, is a vocal opponent of the season just being declared null and void.

He would be open to different options – although believes a deadline for resuming the current campaign needs to be set now – but says the campaign shouldn’t just be wiped out.

“A few people say ‘it’s alright you saying points per game or finish the season at a later date, because you are in the playoffs’,” Johnson said. “But I’m not actually advocating playing the play-offs.

“Let’s talk about the games we’ve played and the amount of time we’ve put into it. We started back in the last week of June until the first week in March – we’re talking the best part of eight or nine months. We’re not talking a third or half of the season, we’re talking about eight or nine months of our lives.

“Not just Chester, every club! For people to just expunge something –through no fault of anybody – just doesn’t sit right with me. Even more so when I see clubs like Vauxhall Motors and Jersey Bulls.”

Johnson says he would advocate the same even if it meant Chester couldn’t go up.

“There is always going to be someone not happy. At Chester, we still believe we can win the league, as unlikely as it might seem. People tell me Brackley could win it and we’re six points behind with two games in hand – so if they can, we can. At least, we could finish high in the playoffs and have a good run, so it’s affecting us too.

“But, taking the Chester connection out of it, I’d much rather see the teams that have had success – if that’s King’s Lynn and York on points-per-game, so be it, promote them. At least we’re basing it on what’s been achieved and not just on what might happen.”
