FENWICK WAIT FOR RETURN GOES ON

- By Neil Harvey

INJURY-HIT Scott Fenwick was due to make his long-awaited Blyth Spartans return when the Covid crisis forced football’s shut down – now he’s looking at his first ever season without a goal!

The striker has not played since October when he was stretchered off just a few minutes into a Northumberland Senior Cup tie with Heaton Stannington with ankle ligament damage.

To make matters worse, the Gateshead-born former Hartlepool striker, who returned to the northeast last summer via a spell in Malta and Chelmsford City, was forced to observe a frustrating season for Spartans, who sat nine points adrift of safety in National League North when the Covid suspension was enforced.

Fenwick could only look on helplessly as his former playing hero, former Newcastle United midfielder Lee Clark, was sacked in early March, leaving teammate Michael Nelson to step into the breach at Croft Park.

But he revealed this week that his five-month injury nightmare was due to come to an end just at the point when the pandemic swept him, forcing him to perhaps accept a rather unwanted personal goalscoring low.

“I’ve never not scored in a season before! This would be my first one,” Fenwick told Non-League Daily. “I was due to finally be back in the squad the weekend in which the suspension started. It had been a long, long fivemonth recovery.

“I’ve been relatively fit for the last couple of seasons which is why I’ve played a lot of games. I just want to make sure I grab a goal.

“It’s been quite hard; you don’t realise how much freedom gets taken away from you. I’ve been on the odd run here and there, and some body weight stuff in the back garden when I can.

“I always look back on stuff, I think it helps you mentally, but this one has been really hard because I haven’t been out this long since I was a kid.”
