REID IS OFF TO FULFIL A FIELD OF DREAMS
TONY Reid has left Westfield after four years to find a new club that can meet his ambitions.
The former Walton & Hersham striker took Field into Step 4 for the first time in their 75year history by winning the Combined Counties League title and then delivered a play-off finish in their first BetVictor Isthmian League South Central season.
Westfield were on course for another spot in the top five this term as they made another push for Step 3, but their targets for next season have been adjusted.
“The club has been terrific for me,” Reid, who joined Westfield in April 2016 after spells in charge at Eastbourne Town and Walton & Hersham, told The NLP.
“I have not got a bad word to say about the chairman Steve Perkins, he has been absolutely brilliant with me as have the committee, staff and supporters.
“We had an honest conversation about whether they could meet my ambitions next season and I don’t think they can. I think Steve and the club want to take a little bit of time out.
“They’re constantly trying to keep up with me and my demands. For me it is walking pace, it is normal for me, but I totally get it from the other side. I’m an ambitious person, I want to win games, losing isn’t in my vocabulary.
“I was totally happy with what I was doing but if they want to consolidate I had to think of the bigger picture and be honest with myself.”
Reid won 63 per cent of his 165 league games in charge alongside loyal assistant Martyn Lee during an unprecedented period of success for the Woking-based club.
Now he wants to fulfil his aims and ambitions elsewhere – especially at a higher level if the opportunity arises.
“My phone has been ringing and I’ve had some good comments,” Reid added. “If there is a club out there that wants to talk, I’ll talk to them.”
