LOYALTY IS SHINING THROUGH FOR WOOD
IT’S only been active for just over a fortnight but Boreham Wood’s Crowdfunding initiative has already raised well in excess of £10,000.
Luke Garrard’s men were in fantastic form and in with a good chance of clinching a play-off spot until the 2019–20 season ended abruptly in in midMarch.
Normally, at this time of year, Boreham Wood – and others I’d imagine – generate much-needed income by selling season tickets for the following season but with the uncertainty of when the 2020-21 campaign will kick off, this isn’t possible.
Indeed, life at Meadow Park will be entirely different this summer with a number of high-profile and attractive pre-season friendlies, against the likes of Arsenal, Brentford and QPR, aren’t going to take place either, at significant cost to the club.
Despite this, Boreham Wood and the manager has managed to retain the majority of the successful squad of last seasn for the 2020-2021 canmpaign for when it starts.
All players under contract for next season are being paid in full, even though there will be limited income for the foreseeable future – and this obviously means the club will have to take a huge financial hit until football with crowds is considered safe enough to return.
With that in mind, a number of loyal Wood supporters have got together to try and help the club by paying for, or contributing towards, their season tickets in advance, therefore giving the club a much-needed revenue stream.
Within seven days of the launch, the campaign proved an unqualified success with nearly £10,000 raised in that time. This included a number of generous additional donations.
Boreham Wood has a fairly small but loyal fan base and despite the clubs lofty position in the football pyramid, they have maintained a local community feel.
To many supporters, the club is more like a family than a football club. The flexibility of the fundraising also provides help to those who might have lost their jobs, been furloughed or are facing the threat of redundancy.
The fundraising runs until July 1, enabling supporters to have two paydays in which to contribute.
The club aim to be as competitive as possible on the pitch and put themselves in a position to finish what they started before the shutdown.
Chairman Danny Hunter has a reputation for listening to the club’s supporters and regularly offers promotions, such as the 99 season tickets as well as heavy discounts on entry for children and concessions.
Hunter also subsidies travel to away games and puts on a free breakfast to travelling supporters. Early indications show the fans are voting with their feet in support of the club and giving something back to Garrard’s promotion assault. For details of the Crowdfunding initiative, visit...
