KEITH IS STUNNED AS BOLD VCD OPT TO TWIST

- By David Richardson

VCD ATHLETIC have made the shock decision to part company with manager Keith McMahon after five years at the helm.

And the outgoing boss admitted he “didn’t see it coming” when taking to twitter to confirm his departure.

The Isthmian League South East club were eighth when the season finished prematurely, nine points adrift of the play-offs with eight games to go. They were also among the most in-form sides in the division.

McMahon was appointed in May 2015, following the departure of Tony Russell to Cray Wanderers, and suffered relegation in his first season with the club from the Isthmian Premier.

But he was able to steady the ship at Step 4 and missed out on a playoff place by a point in the 2018-19 campaign.

However, following ‘much discussion’ at a committee meeting on Thursday evening, the Crayford-based Vickers made the decision to head in a different direction and seek a new man at the helm.

The club said: “Keith has been part of VCD Athletic for the past five seasons and the club would like to put on record their thanks for all his hard work and effort during this time in trying to take the club forward.

“The club also wishes him every success in his next venture.”

Stunned McMahon, the former Thamesmead Town manager, tweeted: “Didn’t see that coming. What’s the saying, free agent. One door closes another one opens.”

McMahon’s last game in charge was a 3-1 home victory over second-placed Ashford United – their fourth win in seven matches.

VCD are now welcoming applications for the vacant hotseat and interested parties should send a CV to club secretary Dave Joy on davejoyo@ yahoo.co.uk.
