GILL: IT’S A MIGHTY ROMANS’ EFFORT TO COMPETE

- By Mark Stillman

JERRY GILL has hailed Bath City’s fundraising as phenomenal as over £45,000 worth of donations arrived within a week.

A target of £35,000 was raised within three days of being set and could hit the £50,000 mark before their meeting with Dorking Wanderers in two weeks’ time.

There were fears from some supporters of the community club that such a hefty price would be unachievable.

“We were worried at one point that it could be too much money to go in the play-offs,” said Gill. “But we had a meeting and came up with a few ideas.

“I’m overwhelmed by the response. It has all put a good feeling back inside me. The support from Bath City fans and other local ones has been incredible.

“The disabled fans’ society from one of my former clubs, Birmingham City, have donated £500, and some of their fans too. It proves how well people pull together in football.”

Gill confirmed City should have an 18-19 man squad for a potential three matches, and all players and staff received negative results from the first round of Covid-19 testing last Saturday.

The Romans boss will oversee three training sessions a week ahead of a meeting with 7th placed Dorking.

“It helps that we are training on the pitch building up to that big match.” said Gill.

“Our training is moving towards more tactical things now while adhering to the distancing laws. I’m watching as much football as I can including both of our matches versus Dorking and completed some analysis work on them.”

Twerton Park will be full of flags rather than supporters, where the average attendance this season was an impressive 1,064.

“We won’t let the empty stadium affect us,” stated Gill. “I guess it will be a familiar process for a lot of our loanees as they’ve played for their parent clubs in under 23s where there aren’t a lot of fans watching on weekday afternoons.

“I’m really looking forward to it.”
