ACE LAIT HAPPIER BACK ON GRASS AT SPORTING

- By Tom Scott

PUTTING fitness first was Chris Lait’s reason for leaving Tamworth for a second time in 12 months – opting instead for a switch playing on grass with promotion rivals Bromsgrove Sporting.

Lait’s latest spell with the Lambs was his second after a move to AFC Telford United didn’t work out.

And after penning a deal with the Rouslers, the winger says the chance to be fitter and show his quality on a regular basis – without being hampered by playing on 3G – made his mind up for him.

“When I was at AFC Telford, I was playing on grass all the time and I think it really helped my body, I felt fit as a fiddle and didn’t have any problems,” he told The NLP.

“When I went back to Tamworth, I started picking up little niggles and I could feel my body aching from the 3G. I’m not saying it’s just because of that but that was definitely part of it to look after myself.

“If I’m fit, I believe I’m one of the better players in my position in the league. I need to give myself the best chance to be fit all the time, and grass does that for me.

“It’s not just that though. Bromsgrove excites me, it’s a local club that is ever-growing so I said to myself I would like to give it a chance if there was an opportunity to move there.

“I wouldn’t go to a club that has no ambition and at least talking about promotion. We’ve got to be looking at that, and the manager is aiming for it. We’ve retained a lot of good players and added quality so we shouldn’t be too far away.”

Sporting boasted the highest average home attendance in the Southern League Premier Central last season by more than 300 fans.

And Lait says playing in front of the ‘intimidating’ Rouslers faithful is something he’s ready for.

“Having the fans is massive,” he added. “I remember when I went there with Tamworth and Bromsgrove’s fan base was huge.

“The crowd carried the players through, it was intimidating. They gave Bromsgrove a huge boost. I can’t wait to be a part of that.”
