DUNDAS AT THE DOUBLE TO BUILD DEFENCE

- By Richard Scott

KIDSGROVE Athletic manager Scott Dundas reckons he has struck gold with the defensive double swoop of former player Lewis Bergin and lynchpin Spencer Gunnell.

Bergin was a youth player at Port Vale and joined the Grove on loan in 2015 before signing permanently for the club a year later following his departure from Newcastle Town.

However, in November, the defender left Kidsgrove to join Congleton Town but is now back at Hollinwood Road for another crack at promotion from NPL Division One East, much to the delight of his boss.

“With James Butler, Richard Duffy and Oliver Jepson leaving, centre back is a place that we needed to strengthen,” Dundas said.

“I had Bergin when I was at Newcastle Town so I know all about his wand of a left foot and I am pleased that he has come back and signed for us.

“He will be a great signing to play at centreback and at full-back.”

Gunnell is another player well known to his new boss having played – and captained – under him at both Newcastle Town and Chasetown.

“I put him as my captain at Chasetown as he had a tremendous pre-season and we had five or six games where he was head and shoulders above anything we had there,” the boss continued.

“Unfortunately, he ruptured his Achilles and we all know how long that takes to get over. I think he did it in 2017, so it has been a while for him.

“He played against Leek (for Kidsgrove) last season which was pleasing for him to get back.

“It’s great to have him on board. He is a six foot, big, strong, quick centre-half, so I’m really happy with that.”
