ON SPOT TO PAST REDS
came at the wrong time for them.
Dion Kelly-Evans forced a good save from goalkeeper George Willis with his low effort towards the near post tipped away for a corner, shortly before County saw a goal chalked off for offside.
The sides left the field with the game goalless, and returned with the traditional wholesale changes, and it was one of the introductions who broke the deadlock.
Thomas poked home a low ball across the six-yard box. This time the goal stood, despite protests from the hosts for another offside.
Walker then leveled things with a well-composed finish, after a lapse in defending saw him with an almost empty net, before Jake Day rattled the bar.
It took a penalty to decide the tie, after a tangle of legs in the box saw Notts with a chance from 12 yards, taken well by Wootton.
Both sides will be pleased with elements of the game, but have plenty to work on.
Notts for all their ability and fitness struggled to break Alfreton down.
While Alfreton were solid defensively and kept a hold of the game in the middle of the park, but lacked the clinical finishing.
Given their later pre-season starts due to the pandemic, both sides looked sharp and disciplined, arguably ahead of where you would expect them to be at this point, but it was difficult to tell which division they are from at times, both playing some enterprising moves.
