THANKS FOR ALL THE MEMORIES!

Wembley hero calls it a day

- By Mark Carruthers

THREE-TIME FA Vase winner and north-east legend Lee Kerr has brought an end to trophy-laden career.

The 33-year-old represented the likes of Seaham Red Star, Shildon and Hebburn Town during his 17-year career in the Northern League – but it was his time with Whitley Bay where he will be most remembered.

After joining the Seahorses in 2003, Kerr’s form at Hillheads led to an offer of a trial at Newcastle United and he spent time training alongside the likes of Nolberto Solano and Michael Owen during Glenn Roeder’s managerial stint at St James Park.

He returned to Whitley Bay to help the club to a Northern League title in 2007 and also claimed two Northumberland Senior Cup winners’ medals – but the FA Vase provided him with the most memorable moments of his career.

Kerr and strike partner Paul Chow both scored in three consecutive finals against Glossop North End, Wroxham and Coalville Town as Ian Chandler’s men helped their club to the second, third and fourth Vase wins in their history.

Memories

Kerr left Hillheads to join Spennymoor Town in 2013 and represented Shildon, Seaham Red Star, Jarrow Roofing and Hebburn Town before returning to Whitley Bay in the summer of 2019 – but it was with hometown club Jarrow where he spent the final 12 months of his career.

Kerr reflected on his career with great pride and had special words for the club where he achieved Wembley success on three separate occasions.

He said: “After 768 appearances (maybe more) for some great clubs and great managers, I’ve decided I won’t be playing Saturday football anymore.

“Since getting my first start at Whitley I’ve made some memories I’d never really dreamt of.

“I’ve met some great people along the way, friends for life and a few who are no longer here, but their memories will stay with me for ever more.

“I’ve played with and against some of the best players in the north east and it’s been a pleasure.

“It’s over to the little fella now to get the ball at his feet, watch this space!”

Fittingly, Kerr’s final game as a Northern League player came in the colours of his hometown club Jarrow and joint-manager Dave Bell hailed the veteran as “an absolute legend”.

“I was delighted when Lee decided to join us at Jarrow,” he added.

“Lee always made a real difference, and he is a top-class lad that made a big difference on and off the pitch.

“I am really sad to see Lee leave and retire, and I will miss seeing him play and having him around our club.

“He will be a huge miss, but we totally respect his decision.

“Lee has achieved so much in the game and is an absolute legend in my eyes.

“He is a great lad, and he will be a big miss for everyone at the club.”
