RAVENS ADD TO SPIREITES’ WOE
AMaguire 74
Cheek 19, Kizzi 84
HEROIC performance from full-back Joe Kizzi helped mastermind a huge three points for Bromley as the Ravens denounced Chesterfield to their first defeat in six.
Kizzi pounced onto a teasing cross from Frankie Raymond at the back post six minutes from time to snatch victory after Chesterfield’s Laurence Maguire had cancelled out Michael Cheek’s opener.
The result capped a miserable week for Chesterfield boss James Rowe, who revealed that top scorer Akwasi Asante is set to be sidelined for nine months after rupturing his Achilles.
Instead, though, Rowe took his frustration out on referee Matthew Dicicco after his side were denied two strong penalty appeals.
“I’ll get myself in trouble,” Rowe seethed. “I’ve just seen the two penalties, the first one is a stonewall on George [Carline] he’s been bundled down and the second one he’s come through him. If their assistant manager is saying it’s a penalty then I don’t know what’s going on. The lads didn’t deserve that.
“They scored two fair goals and there is nothing wrong with their goals. We should’ve had two stonewall penalties. Stonewall. It’s that taste you get after the game that something’s not right, the lads did not deserve that.
“I don’t know what would have happened if there had been 8,000 in here today. Absolute chaos.”
Curtis Weston saw a dinked effort cleared off of the line as Chesterfield started the stronger. But it was Bromley who took the lead against the run of play on 19 minutes when the National League’s top scorer Cheek latched on to a through ball, before calmly slotting it past
Grant Smith for his 19th goal of the season.
Chesterfield were suddenly playing catch-up with Aston Villa loanee Jack Clarke forcing a save from Mark Cousins in the Bromley goal before Maguire met a long throw from Carline and his flick on was deflected against the inside of the post before it was scrambled clear.
Bromley’s Ben Williamson coolly chipped over Smith but his effort was ruled out for offside and Chesterfield responded with Fraser Kerr bringing a fine save out of Cousins at the other end.
But on 74 minutes the home side finally got their reward. An excellent cross from Tom Whelan prompted some pinball in the Bromley box before Maguire rifled his strike past Cousins.
Their delight, however, was short-lived as Bromley still had time to conjure up a winner. Sub Raymond burst down the wing and lofted a cross to the back post where Kizzi headed past Smith.
On Asante’s injury, Rowe added: “It’s been a heartbreaking few days, he’s out for nine months and he’s ruptured his Achilles.
“We’ll be dealing with that as a group, but he wanted us to win today and wished the lads the best.”
