WE SHOULD’VE SCORED SEVEN!

Dragons are near perfect for Dean

WREXHAM boss Dean Keates’ only grumble after a dominant home win against Yeovil Town was the Dragons scored just three goals.

Shaun Pearson, Luke Young and Jordan Davies all found the net in an excellent first half, as Wrexham earned a big three points in the battle for play-off places.

And Keates was effusive in his praise for his players, in a game in which the Dragons missed several chances to score even more.

“The lads were outstanding,” he said. “We were efficient in what we did, we were well organised and well drilled and the lads made the right runs.

“My biggest bug bear I’d say is that it wasn’t 7-0 and that’s not being disrespectful to Yeovil. I said to the players, we were just a little bit sloppy in technique.

“The whole squad is training at a high standard, and that includes players who have not played for a couple of months.

“It’s about the whole group – I had to sleep on who was going to make the bench last night. That’s how it needs to be, with players giving me difficult decisions to make.”

Wrexham were well on top from the off, and their early pressure paid immediate dividends as Pearson headed in from Young’s corner on nine minutes.

At the other end, Rob Lainton parried Tom Knowles’ dipping free-kick wide on 16 minutes but the visitors lacked chances.

Wrexham then doubled their advantage on 20 minutes – Davies’ pull-back was behind Gold Omotayo but Young was on hand to drive the ball in via a deflection.

Davies continued his own goalscoring form nine minutes later, with the pick of the bunch from Wrexham’s perspective.

Young and Davies stood over a 25-yard free-kick, but it was the left-footed Davies who curled a brilliant shot into the bottom corner.

Yeovil improved after switching back to a four at the back, but they were indebted to goalkeeper Adam Smith on the stroke of halftime that Wrexham did not add to their scoreline.

Theo Vassell headed down at the back post from another Young corner in the final action of the half, but Smith did well to deflect the ball clear.

After the break, Omotayo got behind the defence but opted to shoot early instead of rounding Smith and Cameron Green clipped the post from the rebound.

Davies then had a shot deflect wide on 69 minutes, and Smith came to the rescue again moments again to deny Pearson from another header.

Wrexham were happy to see out the win from then on, however, sealing a comfortable home win.
