THE FAN OWNERS DERBY – WITH A TROPHY

TWO of the Non-League game’s oldest and most successful supporter-owned football clubs will go head-to-head this summer to compete for a new trophy, designed to celebrate fan ownership.

NPL Premier FC United welcome Enfield Town, the UK’s oldest supporter-owned club, Enfield Town, to Broadhurst Park on Saturday July 24 for the Supporters Direct Trophy, otherwise known as the Brian Lomax Trophy.

With 36 years combined, Enfield and FC United continue to prove the long-term viability of fan-run clubs, as opposed the boom-and-bust model employed by so many clubs chasing riches for their directors.

Both clubs have a vision of being inclusive for all and at the hub of the community with a range of teams playing at the highest sustainable level possible.

The match will also celebrate Enfield Town’s 20th anniversary and Towners chairman Paul Reed said: “I’m delighted that we have been able to organise another fixture with FC United of Manchester, this being our 20th year. It’s great that we can mark the occasion with another incredible fan-owned club.

“Just as importantly is that chance to play for the Brian Lomax Trophy. Brian was an incredible inspiration in the formation of our club and encouraged, guided and supported us and many other clubs through our early months and years. It’s a great honour to be able to play for a cup in his name.”

FC United chair Adrian Seddon added: “After two Covid hit seasons, our trip down to Enfield seems like a lifetime ago but our supporters won’t have forgotten the warm reception we received and we are delighted to finally get the opportunity to welcome them to Broadhurst Park.

“After all football’s issues over the last couple of weeks we are very proud to be announcing what will be a real celebration of fan ownership and friendship with a club that blazed the trail for ourselves and others to follow.”

The game will be pay on the gate with adults at £9, £5 for concessions, Under 18’s £2 and Under 5s free with a paying adult.
