FOWLS PROUD OF BORO PROGRESS

- By Matt Badcock

LEE FOWLER says he leaves Radcliffe proud of his work after he parted company with the Step 3 club — and he’s keen for a swift return to the dug-out. The former Coventry, Huddersfield, Wrexham and Fleetwood midfielder left Boro by mutual consent following Tuesday’s Pitching In NPL Premier division defeat to Morpeth Town. Fowler, who won the Midland League as Ilkeston Town boss, believes the work he was helping the club put in off the pitch to improve their academy pathways and infrastructure will stand the test of time.

Pathways

And the 38-year-old, who took the job a month before Covid hit in February 2020, isn’t looking for a breather before his next challenge.

“I am proud of what we did,” Fowler told The NLP. “I’d like to believe, along with the we’ve made it more professional and the club can, in the longterm, benefit from what we’ve created and the pathways the club can offer local footballers.

“I know people want to see results on the pitch but, over the Covid period, we put in a lot of hard yards to give the club the best possible chance of facilitating players locally and revenue. I wish the club all the best and thank the chairman, Paul Hilton, and Marcus McCabe (owner) for the opportunity they gave me.

“I am looking to get back in straightaway. I’m going up to shadow Lee Johnson at Sunderland for a few days to keep learning and developing myself. It’s a job I love, and enjoy.”

Commitment

Chairman Paul Hilton said: “I can tell you all with no word of a lie that Lee Fowler is the hardest working manager I’ve known in the game.

“His dedication and sheer commitment level is staggering and on both a personal and prochairman, fessional level he has been a pleasure to work with. Over the last 18 months, Fowls has been heavily involved in developing aspects of the club that will see dividends paid well into the future.

“Together we have worked on rebuilding and remodelling our youth development through our partnerships with the Football Learning Group, our Under 21 side and juniors.”

Bobby Grant and Rhys Day took charge of yesterday’s game with Buxton.
