WE SHOWED SPIRIT JUST LIKE TYSON, BEAMS DOS

- By Jon Couch

PAUL DOSWELL says his Havant & Waterlooville heroes summoned their “inner Tyson Fury” in knocking out big guns Torquay United in Wednesday night’s FA Cup fourth qualifying round replay.

The Hawks fought back from 2-1 down to secure an impressive 4-2 victory at a rainlashed Westleigh

Park and, with it, claimed a sixth higher-division cup scalp in the club’s 23-year history.

And Doswell explained that just like WBC heavyweight champ Fury in his spirited victory over Deontay Wilder a fortnight ago, the National League South side came through with a monumental show of belief and mental strength.

“We used the Tyson Fury-Deontay Wilder analogy before the game and at half-time,” Doswell told the Portsmouth News.

“We told the players Wilder had knocked down Fury twice (in their recent World Heavyweight title clash) but Fury had then won the next few rounds and the fight. We said to the players ‘go out and do the same thing’.

“It was an absolutely incredible performance in the second half – one of the best I’ve ever seen from any of my teams.

“We bossed the whole game apart from two minutes in the first half. We didn’t stop being on top.”

Joe Oastler handed the Hawks an eighth-minute lead but two goals in the space of four minutes from Chiori Johnson and Klaidi Lolos turned the tables in the Gulls’ favour by the break.

Back came the Hawks with Jake McCarthy’s stunning effort restoring parity before Doswell’s side delivered two knockout blows in the final eight minutes, through veteran Scott Rendell and Tommy Wright, to earn a first round tie at Charlton Athletic.

Havant’s victory capped another week of cup replay shocks with NPL Premier side Buxton leading the way with a 3-1 victory over

Kettering Town, courtesy of an extra-time brace from Diego De Girolamo.

National League North leaders Brackley Town crashed out 2-1 at Guiseley, while Dorking Wanderers were edged out by Southern League high-flyers Hayes & Yeading on penalties after a 2-2 draw at Meadowbank.

Eastleigh were taken to extra time by Folkestone Invicta before coming through 3-2 – the same scoreline enjoyed by Gateshead in seeing off Marske United.

Penalties were also needed to separate Yeovil Town and

Weymouth in a rain-lashed south coast derby at the Bob Lucas Stadium. The National League rivals shared a 1-1 draw but Brandon Goodship’s missed spot-kick saw the Glovers through. St Albans City also saw off Corinthian-Casuals’ challenge from the 12-yard mark.

There were no problems, however, for the rest of the National League big guns taken to a replay on Tuesday night. Wrexham took full advantage of their last-gasp equaliser at Marine on Saturday by coming through 2-0 at the second attempt, while Notts County ruthlessly ended the challenge of

Tamworth, winning 4-0 at Meadow Lane.

York City edged out brave Morpeth Town 3-1 on the road while FC Halifax Town were taken all the way by Step 4 Pontefract Collieries – Jack Vale settling a tense affair at The Shay.
