PARKY AIMS TO FINISH THE JOB

- By Mark Carruthers

ALTRINCHAM manager Phil Parkinson is looking forward to having several key players back to full fitness as his side look to secure a televised FA Cup second round tie against Charlton Athletic.

The Robins will host National League North promotion contenders Gateshead on Tuesday night after the two sides battled to a 2-2 draw in their original meeting on Tyneside last Saturday.

Parkinson’s men looked set to exit the competition after goals from Adam Campbell and Greg Olley put the Heed within touching distance of the second round.

But an Alty rally inspired by the introduction of several players back from injury and illness saw Marcus Dinanga and Jake Moult find the net to set up Tuesday’s replay at the J.Davidson Stadium.

Parkinson said: “We haven’t

had the depth of squad but the players we got back really helped us with the quality they bring.

“We looked stronger but these lads haven’t been playing because of the two Covid breaks – I’ve said all I need to say on that.

“But having extra gametime in them will be a massive positive ahead of the replay and we are delighted with the character they have shown to get back.

“It’s now about making the most of that.”

Parkinson’s opposite number Mike Williamson admitted that his side would have to improve if they are to pull off a surprise win against their former National League North opponents.

“There are loads of things we can review to improve on but we have to look at the positives,” he added.

“I feel as though we went toe-to-toe with them and we were the better team in large spells.

“But that’s football, that’s the uncertainty of it all, and it’s our fault why we haven’t progressed yet.”
