ASKEY SAYS YES TO SOS FROM YORK

- By Matt Green

JOHN ASKEY has joined York City to support manager Steve Watson on a temporary basis.

Askey links up with the former Newcastle United and Aston Villa full back who continues to be without his regular assistant manager Micky Cummins as he awaits a Football Association ruling over historical betting breaches.

Cummins was charged by the FA in August in relation to 148 bets placed on football matches between January 2015 and March 2019.

The former Port Vale, Macclesfield Town and Rotherham United midfielder who has twice been caretaker manager of Gateshead, 43, has yet to hear a verdict on the case.

FA rule E8 says that players, coaches, match officials and club staff are prohibited from betting on the outcome of football matches.

Youth-team manager Tim Ryan, the former Doncaster Rovers and Southport player, has been supporting Watson since last month.

Askey was set to attend York’s National League North game at Leamington on Tues- day night as a specta- tor, a match the Minstermen lost 2-0 to leave them two points outside the play-off places.

His first game was yesterday afternoon’s trip to Curzon Ashton.

The experienced 57-year-old made more than 500 appearances for Macclesfield Town across three decades before going on to manage the Silkmen over two spells.

Most recently, he managed League One Shrewsbury Town and League Two side Port Vale.

He was recently an adviser to the new Macclesfield club after it reformed in the North West Counties League this season.

York centre-back Josh King was also charged with betting breaches but his onemonth FA ban was due to expire this week.

On-loan keeper Ryan Whitley and midfielder Michael Woods have previously been disciplined for betting breaches.
