MARRIOTT’S LATE MAGIC ENOUGH TO SINK CARDS

- By Peter Moore STAR MAN: Adam Marriott (Barnet) ATT: 1,779 ENTERTAINMENT: ★★★★★ REFEREE: Elliott Swallow

ADAM Marriott struck late to ensure Barnet took all three points and continued their impressive form under Dean Brennan.

The Bees have now won six games in their last ten since Brennan has been at the helm.

In a poor game, Woking took a second-minute lead through Joe McNerney before Marriott headed the Bees level on 28 minutes.

And the former Eastleigh and King’s Lynn striker capped a fine individual display by grabbing the winner for the Bees in stoppage time.

“I’m delighted with the character we showed today,” a jubilant Brennan told The NLP.

“The togetherness, we kept going and worked our socks off. We have a lot of ability, we are quiet a young side, not an experienced one and delighted with the victory and we will enjoy this evening.”

Barnet were caught cold inside 90 seconds when a free-kick from Max Kretzschmar was met by the head of McNerney which beat Aston Oxborough in the Barnet goal.

Barnet thought they had drawn level when Marriott had the ball in the net, only for the assistant referee to flag for offside.

Indeed, Marriott was heavily involved in Barnet’s attacks and almost drew the Bees level after a mistake from Moussa Diarra let in the striker, but was denied by the outstretched leg of keeper Mark Smith.

From the resulting corner, however, Barnet levelled when Marriott’s header off the underside of the bar crossed the line.

Woking hit back after the break and conjured up the first opportunity of the second half when Inih Effiong was played in by Rohan Ince, but the striker was denied from close range from Oxborough.

Woking were clearly missing the services of injured leading goalscorer Tahvon Campbell with the front two pairing of Jamar Loza and Effiong struggling against a well organised Barnet side.

In a poor second half of few chances, it appeared that Woking were heading for their first drawn game in the league this season.

But, in the nick of time, it was Barnet who snatched victory late on when Serhat Tasdemir’s cross into the box missed everyone except the alert Marriott who was on hand to tap home. There was still time for Woking to salvage a point from a corner but Effiong headed wide as Barnet held on to climb into 15th.

Disappointed Cards boss Alan Dowson said: “Defensively we are not good. We conceded another two goals from set plays. I blame myself because I keep saying it will be alright.

“We have signed some experienced defenders, we have got decent full backs but we keep conceding goals, but the amount of goals we are conceding is scandalous to be honest.”
