LYNCH IS AIMING TO SEIZE BIG CHANCE!

- By Mark Carruthers

MORPETH Town manager Craig Lynch is eager to seize the “fantastic opportunity” handed to him at the Northern Premier League club.

The former Sunderland and Spennymoor Town forward stepped into a caretaker role following the departure of former Highwaymen boss Stephen Turnbull earlier in the season.

Lynch impressed during his temporary stint in the dugout as he inspired an upturn in form comprising of just two defeats in 11 games in all competitions.

That run saw the 28-year-old handed the managerial role on a permanent basis and revealed his delight at being offered the chance to carry on the progress made by the club over the last ten years.

“It’s a fantastic opportunity for me to be given and I am ready to work hard to help this club realise its potential,” Lynch told The NLP.

“These aren’t the circumstances I wanted to have this job because in an ideal world, Stephen Turnbull would still be manager of the football club.

“We had a lot of bad luck in the opening part of the season and I don’t think anyone could doubt that.

“Stephen resigned and I think that made it a little easier for me to take the job because I wouldn’t have felt right if he’d left the club in any other way.

“Football is a funny game and I am delighted to accept the offer to take this club forwards.

“I took over at Seaham Red Star at the age of 25, I’m not scared of the challenge of being a young manager and now it’s down to me to prove what I can do with Morpeth Town.”0

Lynch took permanent charge for the first time as his side claimed a 4-2 win over Pickering Town in an FA Trophy third qualifying round tie two weeks ago.

That win was followed up by a narrow 2-1 home victory over fellow NPL Premier Division strugglers Grantham Town as the Highwaymen climbed out of the relegation zone for the first time this season.

The Town boss is now targeting success on a number of fronts as his permanent reign gets into full swing.

“We need our standards as high as they can be,” he explained.

“We want to finish as high up the table as we possibly can, we wanted to do well in the FA Trophy, we are still the holders of the Northumberland Senior Cup, and that’s a cup we want to keep this season.

“It’s an exciting time at the club and hopefully I can help move things forward on a number of fronts.”
