CLARETS HIT HIGH ROAD IN TREK FOR CHARITY

- By Neil Harvey

BIG-HEARTED supporters of Chelmsford City have so far raised nearly £7,000 for local charities after completing a gruelling eight-day 250-mile cross-country trek.

The eight supporters hiked in a daily relay from Bridport in Dorset, and arrived at Maidstone United’s Gallagher Stadium in Maidstone, Kent, in time to watch the Clarets’ game against the National League South champions last Saturday.

The money raised will be shared between Essex and Herts Air Ambulance, the local homelessness charity, Chess, and Chelmsford City Supporters’ Club.

“The starting point this year was chosen as Hell Lane, just west of Bridport,” explained Ross Rogers, one of the hikers.

“This part of the walk proved to be one of the lowest moments on any of our walks a few years ago due to the mud, rain, and quickly fading light. We thought it was time to try and exorcise some of those demons.”

“It was a tough challenge, and each of us had difficult moments both physically and mentally throughout the week, particularly for one of our number – who to avoid embarrassment, will remain nameless – who managed to leave his packed suitcase at home! An urgent shopping trip was required!”

“However, the support of the other walkers, plus the incredibly generous donations received really helped get us through it. It’s a privilege to be able to support such great causes.

“We would also like to thank all at Maidstone United, who made us feel very welcome and helped spread the word of what we were doing.”
