STARS DELIVER ON THEIR STADIUM PROMISE

- By Neil Harvey

WREXHAM co-owner Rob McElhenney hailed a “symbolic moment” for the club after buying back the Racecourse Stadium.

The ground had been in the possession of Wrexham Glyndwr University since 2011, when it was sold by former owners Geoff Moss and Ian Roberts in order to avoid bankruptcy.

However, the arrival of Hollywood duo McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds – who bought the club in February 2021 – revitalised Wrexham’s finances and a survey held in November showed 94 percent of Dragons fans wanted the pair to buy back the freehold. Now, they have.

In a statement, McElhenney said: “This is a great day for both the club and ourselves, and one that we targeted from the first day of our ownership, encouraged by the vote of confidence from the club’s fans in November 2021.

“While day to day, this changes very little for the club, the symbolism of this moment is a massively important step for the club going forward.

“We would like to thank Wrexham Glyndwr University, our neighbours, for the support they have provided the club historically. We look forward to enhancing our already strong working relationship with them.”

Reynolds tweeted: “So happy for the entire @ Wrexham_AFC community. The importance of the club owning its own stadium can’t be understated. And thank you Glyndwr Uni for watching after the Racecourse Ground these last many years. None of this is possible without you.”

Wrexham have also completed their first summer signing, with ex-Kidderminster, AFC Fylde and Crawley Town centre-back Jordan Tunnicliffe arriving on a free.

“I’m really excited,” said the 28-year-old, who was named in the League Two team of the season in 2020-21.
