GREAT SCOTT IS BACK-UP PLAN NO MEAN FOR MAC!

- By Jon Couch

ANYTHING you can do…Cedwyn Scott showed manager Luke Williams that there is no stress without Macaulay Langstaff after his two-goal show kept Notts County on top of the table.

Scott was handed the lone striker’s role for the Boxing Day visit of Oldham Athletic with 21-goal top scorer Langstaff still recovering from injury.

And the 24-year-old stepped up to the plate with a clinical first-half double to take his tally to the season to 11.

Langstaff is one of NonLeague football’s hottest properties after taking the National League by storm since his summer switch from Gateshead.

But Scott, who joined his Heed strike partner at Meadow Lane three weeks later, insists that although he is happy to play second fiddle, he is hungry for more goals.

“I’m really happy obviously,” Scott told Pies TV. “I haven’t played that [lone striker’s] role much this season because Macca’s been of fire and kept his place, rightly so. When I’m called upon I like to deliver and show I’m available.

“I always like to be in double figures by December so sitting on nine in the last game of December, I was thinking if I can get a goal then I would be reasonably happy.

“But getting the second takes me to 11 so I am happy, but I always want more.

“Macca came up to me and congratulated me after the game but I must make it clear it is still his shirt, he’s still the number one striker at the club because he’s been unbelievable so far this season.

“But if it comes available for me to play there then I’m more than happy to step up.”

Scott headed home Sam Austin’s inch-perfect cross to put the home side in front after just four minutes, but the lead lasted a matter of seconds before Joe Nuttall equalised for the visitors.

Kyle Cameron restored County’s lead with his first goal of the season on nine minutes before Ruben Rodrigues made it 3-1 after Scott’s shot was saved.

Scott then wrapped it up his second just before halftime.

“It’s an absolute dream when Sam Austin puts it on a plate for me to get my head on it. It’s an absolutely unbelievable cross from him. He was outstanding all game,” Scott continued.

“We don’t like to lose control of a game very much and their goal came straight after we had scored, but we reacted well from that and the welloiled machine go going again.

Provider

“The team are scoring from everywhere at the minute and I think that’s down to the system the gaffer is playing and the way we control games and dictate the ball.”

Victory maintained the Magpies’ four-point lead at the top after Wrexham made light work of fellow promotion hopefuls Solihull Moors in front of 10,150 at the Racecourse.

Paul Mullin claimed a hat-trick as Wrexham swept aside a Moors side reduced to ten men after Kyle Storer was sent off for a poor challenge on Luke

Young,

Ollie Palmer fired Wrexham in front before turning provider for strike partner Mullin to double the advantage.

Storer’s red card opened the floodgates with defender Aaron Hayden and Mullin completing the rout.

As a result, Wrexham equalled a club record of 15 home wins in a row in all competitions and boss Phil Parkinson said: “We’ve got quite a few players who haven’t played for a while but we grew into the game. Some of the pressing in the second half was top class and obviously the ruthless edge in front of goal was excellent.”

Chesterfield boss Paul Cook was sent off but his Spireites still managed to return to winnings ways with victory over struggling Scunthorpe United.

Joe Quigley’s brace sandwiched Caolan Lavery’s strike but the game was marred by a touchline confrontation between Cook and referee Scott Simpson, which saw the Spireites chief sent off before sarcastically applauding the official and whipping up supporters before heading down the tunnel.

Woking stay fourth after the enjoyed a 2-1 success in the local derby at Aldershot Town.

The Cards edged into an 11th-minute lead when former Shot Rhys Browne fired home from the penalty spot after Padraig Amond had been upended.

Darren Sarll’s men went 2-0 up heading into the last minutes when Jim Kellerman’s drilled cross was deflected in by Corey Jordan.

But, there was a late twist when Dan Moss conceded a penalty and was handed a second yellow card with two minutes to play. Inih Effiong made no mistake from the spot to pull a goal back but Woking held on.

Ryan De Havilland scored a dramatic last-minute winner as Barnet defeated Boreham Wood 2-1 at the Hive, in a game which saw three red cards.

Nicke Kabamba put the high-flying Barnet in front shortly after half-time but was then sent off following when an-off-the-ball with Wood’s Bruno Andrade.

Jack Payne tapped home an equaliser but after Femi Ilesanmi was sent off for Wood, De Havilland curled home from a free-kick to snatch the points.

Louis Dennis scored the only goal of the game as Bromley beat playoff chasers Southend United at Roots Hall, and it was the same scoreline at Dagenham & Redbridge where Myles Weston’s strike saw them edge past lowly Maidstone United.

Wealdstone remain just outside the play-off places after Nathan Ferguson’s brace helped beat Maidenhead United in an entertaining affair at Grosvenor Vale.

Solo effort

Midfield man Ferguson fired his opener into the top corner before top scorer Olufela Olomola doubled the lead on the half-hour.

The Magpies reduced the deficit in the 35th minute through a header from Emile Acquah, who then equalised through Acquah again on the stroke of half-time.

But Ferguson clinched victory with his second of the match just before the hour when finishing off a slick passing move.

Gateshead moved to within a point of safety with a fine 3-0 victory at

York City. Danny Elliott’s penalty handed the Heed an eighth-minute lead and repeated the feat from the spot midway through the second half before defender Owen Bailey wrapped it up.

Chris Conn-Clarke scored a stoppage-time winner as Altrincham came from behind to beat FC Halifax Town 2-1.

Matty Warburton put the Shaymen in front with a fine curling free-kick into the top corner but Altrincham levelled things up nine minutes after the break through

Ryan Colclough.

Colclough came within a whisker of winning it but Altrincham would not be denied and claimed the points courtesy of ConnClarke’s superb solo effort.

West country rivals Torquay United and Yeovil Town shared the points in a 1-1 draw at Plainmoor – Yeovil’s Malachi Linton cancelling out Mark Ellis’ opener – and it was 1-1 at Dorking Wanderers after Ryan Seager’s equaliser four minutes from time earned them a point against Eastleigh, who earlier led through Alfie Lloyd’s fine strike.
