MCCANN IS BEAVERING AWAY NO LONGER
TAXI driver Gary McCann has negotiated his toughest crossroads yet after departing Hampton & Richmond Borough this week.
The former Hendon boss mutually agreed to step down followibng the goalless home draw with Worthing on New Year’s Day which left the Beavers 19th in the National League South table with just six wins from 22 league games.
McCann has been at the Beveree helm since 2018 and was contracted until next year.
He has proved a huge success with the supporters, achieving more FA Cup first round appearances than any other manager in the club’s history and has brought some great times to the club.
Hampton were recently acquired by brothers Stefano and Rafa Petruzzo – the former having spent six years as Strategy Director at Liverpool.
A statement from the club’s website read: “It has been mutually agreed that Gary McCann will step down from his position as manager. The club thanks Gary who has been an integral part of the club’s history.
“The club would also like to thank Gary and his management team for all their valuable contributions and considerable efforts over the past four years.
“The club will now start the recruitment process for Gary’s replacement. Academy manager Steve Bates has assumed first team responsibilities on an interim basis.”
McCann wrote on twitter: “I’ve always asked the players to be the best version of themselves.
“They have been in the circumstances. I thank you for your effort.
“Always attempted to be the best version of myself. Always done the best I could but in the circumstances, it just wasn’t good enough in 22/23.
“Hampton & Richmond is full of great people and I thank each and every one of you for your continued support. I wish everyone involved with the club the very best of luck. Onwards and upwards.”
