BOSS DEAN IS KEEN ON IRON

ELLIOTT Whitehouse’s strike six minutes from time earned Scunthorpe United a precious point in what could be caretaker boss Michael Nelson’s final game in charge.

After a torrid final few years under the ownership of Peter Swann, former Ilkeston Town owner David Hilton was announced as the club’s new owner on Wednesday – hours before the Iron achieved their first away win in more than a year at FC Halifax Town.

One of his first moves at Glanford Park could be appointing a new boss with Jimmy Dean watching from the directors’ box just 48 hours after announcing he was leaving National League North side Peterborough Sports.

Nelson, who has led the Iron admirably since taking over in interim charge at the end of November, was unaware about talk surrounding his future.

“All I can do is focus on the football,” he said. “I can’t control anything that happens outside. Those things are not my decisions and not my domain.

“I was here to do a job today and believe I did it, and so did the players. We took a point and in the end we were disappointed not to take all three.

“I’ve had no conversations about my future. I’ve spoke to (Hilton) briefly, but I guess I’ll find out what’s in store in the future.”

When asked if he would be disappointed to leave the Iron, Nelson said: “What do I get for being disappointed? Nothing. I know who I am and how I’ve carried myself, if anything I’ll just be proud of what I’ve done.”

Although relying on a late equaliser, Scunthorpe were good value for their point having dominated the opening 45 minutes.

Cameron Wilson’s direct running saw him time and again get in behind the visiting defence, with Whitehouse and Jacob Butterfield dominating the middle of the park.

A change in formation helped the Ravens be better after the break and they had already begun to threaten before Michel Cheek turned home James Vennings’ low cross at the back post just before the hour mark.

Scunthorpe though refused to lie down, and Whitehouse finished coolly from close range after a shot from substitute Liam Feeney had bounced into his path.

Bromley boss Andy Woodman said: “I’ve just reminded them that this football club was in the Championship 10 years ago, so if we’re disappointed as Bromley Football Club to be drawing away at Scunthorpe we’ve come a long way. I’m really chuffed.

“It was a really good game of football.”
