PETER TELLS DRAGONS’ PRE-HOLLYWOOD TALE

- By Jack Tucker

WITH the past few years bringing some of the highest highs to Wrexham after their takeover by Hollywood actors, Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, many would be quick to discredit the Welsh club’s rich history prior to 2020.

However, author and lifelong Wrexham fan Peter Jones has detailed rundown on the Dragons’ long story in his new book ‘Wrexham AFC 1864-2022 – History Only Tells A Story’.

“I’m just trying to keep the good history alive,” Peter told The NLP, “I was also a bit of a statistician with the club.

“The book is about our history, but I wrote it at a time where it opens up new chapters.”

The aim is to educate not just Wrexham fans, but any neutrals who love the historic side of the game, and talking with Peter certainly reflected his passion for wanting to keep this rich past alive.

“We have the oldest international stadium in the world with Wales playing on the Racecourse and we’ve been playing at the Racecourse since

1864 apart from two seasons,” he said,

“We also have a giant killing history, we had a great team in 1977/78, we’ve had some great times and some low times over the years.

“Ever since Rob and Ryan’s taken over, it’s just been incomparable because these guys have brought another level.”

Peter was part of the Wrexham Supporters’ Trust which took over the club in 2011, but seeing the likes of Salford, Fleetwood, and Forest Green progress with financial backing, they sought to seek investment and struck gold with their new Hollywood owners.

“Rob and Ryan have brought something new to the table,” said Peter.

“Our history is there and it’s kind of looking forwards with our history in the past, it’s there for everyone to read. There’s a new chapter to come.”
