CURRENT OF DOLPHINS

- Whisken 35, Daws 45 By Peter Leppington STAR MAN: Marcus Daws (Poole Town) ENTERTAINMENT: ★★★★★

GOALS from Jamie Whisken and Marcus Daws gave Poole Town victory over rivals Hayes & Yeading in a key game for the play-off places. Poole came in to the match unbeaten in 13, but had drawn seven. The Dolphins’ unbeaten record, though, remained intact with a hard-fought victory.

Hayes were by far the better side for the first half hour. Poole Town manager, Tom Killick, said after the first 15 minutes he thought they would lose 5-0.

Hayes were first to the ball, winning everything and creating all the chances.

They took the lead when Emmanuel Moses’ cross from the centre found Daniel Green unmarked on the right, who headed comfortably passed shot-stopper Luke Cairney.

From a corner, Joshua Lelan’s header was cleared off the line by Adeoye Olumuyiwa to deny Hayes a second.

Further chances fell to Hayes in the first 20 minutes before a bit of a lull in the game for the next quarter of an hour, while they had a penalty appeal waved away by the referee.

Poole won a corner which Jamie Whisken neatly headed through a crowded box in to the corner of the net.

Poole were then awarded a penalty when Wesley Fogden was bundled over as Hayes tried

to clear. Simon Grant guessed the right way and pushed Tony-James Lee’s effort round a post – a great save.

Poole kept pressing and won another free-kick after Toby Holmes was fouled. Marcus Daws, just reently released by Bournemouth, stepped up and expertly struck the ball to leave the goalkeeper standing.

Killick had high praise for the youngster for showing “personality and performance”, despite the setback.

Poole were stronger from the start of the second half and Hayes did not have a chance on goal for 20 minutes.

Poole almost scored immediately when Fogden set through Toby Holmes, but he fired just over.

Daws again impressed with

a neat cut inside from the right and powerful shot bringing a good save from Grant.

Emmanuel was put free by Jalloh, but his effort took a bottle and went over the bar.

Poole largely controlled the second half, but the odd careless pass almost cost them.

Olumuyiwa gave the ball away and Hayes threatened but Olumuyiwa redeemed himself with a great last-ditch tackle.

Daws ran most of the pitch, but his ball to Lee was not quite right when there was a chance to seal the result.

However Poole held on to secure a crucial three points.
