Sir, ‘I am a human being’. Words heard repeatedly on news reports from refugees, beaten by border guards, abused by frightened locals and left to huddle by the side of the road on the frontiers of Europe.

Last week the bodies of asphyxiated men, women children were found in abandoned meat lorry in Austria.

We are all horrified by this greeddriven, mass murder of folk escaping from the hell of barrel bombing in Syria.

Yet the idea of offering sanctuary to those who have survived the terrors of the journey to arrive in Europe seems to contradict any sympathy we feel for the corpses found in the lorry, or the thousands who have
