Show more re­spect for hu­man life

Sir, ‘I am a hu­man be­ing’. Words heard re­peat­edly on news re­ports from refugees, beaten by bor­der guards, abused by fright­ened lo­cals and left to hud­dle by the side of the road on the fron­tiers of Europe.

Last week the bod­ies of as­phyx­i­ated men, women chil­dren were found in aban­doned meat lorry in Aus­tria.

We are all hor­ri­fied by this greed­driven, mass mur­der of folk es­cap­ing from the hell of bar­rel bomb­ing in Syria.

Yet the idea of of­fer­ing sanc­tu­ary to those who have sur­vived the ter­rors of the jour­ney to ar­rive in Europe seems to con­tra­dict any sym­pa­thy we feel for the corpses found in the lorry, or the thou­sands who have
