THE ISLAY marathon takes place this Sunday and will feature the Ethiopian winner of the 2010 Houston marathon amongst its entrants.

Teshome Gelana, who set a course record of 2hours 7minutes in the American event five years ago, is one of four runners from the African country entering this year’s Islay event.

The marathon will start at the Portnahaven village hall at 7.30am and finish at the Ramsay hall, Port Ellen.

There will be a free bus leaving Port Ellen at about 6am to pick up runners along the way to take them to the start.

The entry fee for individual runners is £ 30, with relay teams of between two and four people allowed to take part at £40 per team.

All runners will need to register on Saturday in Islay high school from 3.30pm onwards.

The day will be rounded off with a ceilidh in the high school on the Sunday evening for all runners, volunteers and supporters.
