Applicatio­ns open for local elections

NOMINATION­S are open for community councils across the Highlands.

Anyone interestin­g in acting as a voice for their town or village can put themselves forward to stand for election.

Elections will take place on Wednesday, November 18, and anyone on the electoral register for their community council area can apply.

Applicatio­ns must be submitted by 4pm on Tuesday, October 6. Forms are available from the council’s service centre by calling 01349 886606 or online at www.highland.gov.uk

Strictly debut for Morar girl Carol

LOCHABER-BORN weather girl Carol Kirkwood swapped her umbrella for sequins at the weekend when she made her first appearance on Strictly Come Dancing.

The 53-year- old, whose own name is McKellaig, grew up in Morar and attended the village school, Lady Lovat primary. On Friday night the BBC One presenter debuted in the first episode of the season with dance partner, Pasha Kovalev.

Trust hosts repair cash workshop

A FREE workshop will be held in Fort William this week to explain how to receive funding to repair war memorials.

The War Memorials Trust is hosting the event in the Nevis Centre on Wednesday night (October 7), starting at 7pm.

Allan Henderson, chairman of Highland council’s community services committee, said: ‘ There are still grants available from the Centenary Memorials Restoratio­n Fund and I would urge anyone who wants to find out more about how to get funding to conserve their local war memorial to go along to their nearest workshop.’
