Mid Argyll fishermen dominate Inverawe charity shield event
MID ARGYLL dominated the prize-list once again at the Inverawe Charity Shield fishing competition – with newly-married Archie MacGilp Junior taking the main prize on Sunday.
Archie, from Ardrishaig, who married Jill last Saturday said: ‘It’s the first time I’ve been allowed out.’
His five best fish won the shield for heaviest catch, 14lb 10oz; his uncle Dougal MacGilp, of Lochgilphead, was in second place, with 12lb 2oz.
The heaviest fish trophy went to Maurice Clark, Lochgilphead, weighing-in at 3lb 13oz.
The young fisherman of the year award was won by nine-year- old Anavu MacDougall from Oban; his heaviest fish weighedin at 3lb.
The annual fly-fishing competition is held at Inverawe Smokehouses and Country Park, near Taynuilt, and this year 21 anglers took part, with a soup and sandwich lunch before the prize-giving ceremony at the Inverawe Tearoom and Shop, courtesy of the Campbell-Preston family.
This year the day’s entry fees, donations and a draw raised £ 800 and goes to the charitable trust set up in memory of Laura Campbell-Preston.
‘Laura was a teacher and the trust sponsors orphans through secondary school education in Tanzania,’ said Robert Campbell-Preston, as he thanked everyone who made Sunday’s competition such a success.
‘In Tanzania, primary education is free, but secondary has to be paid for as only 20 per cent of the children receive state-funded secondary education.
‘Laura’s trust wants to support a 14-year- old girl called Ester through her last three years in secondary school; unfortunately her sponsors have hit on hard times and are unable to pay any future school fees. Ester is an outgoing girl, who loves sport, particularly running and is very conscientious, with good reports academically.’
