Banging the drum for Banavie park

-

VOLUNTEERS raised more than £1,330 when they swung into action at a party to improve Banavie play park.

Friends of Banavie Park’s first major fundraising event was a huge success last Saturday.

Despite adverse weather, there was a good turnout for the funpacked afternoon of activities, which brought the local community together.

The event kicked off with a bang, when Steve from Drumfum led the kids in an amazing and noisy drumming workshop in the huge No Fuss Events saddlespan tent. A kids’ ceilidh got everyone up dancing, leading on to a disco from Cheezy Beats with special guests Tigger and Buzz Lightyear.

Also in the tent there was storytelling, face painting, a baking stall and some park design ideas on display.

Outside in the park was a ‘cross the swamp’ challenge, nature crafts in the orchard, a fire pit with toasting marshmallows, pony rides on Shetland ponies Lottie and Davro, a bouncy castle and karaoke tent.

Vicky Dodman, chairperson of Friends of Banavie Park said: ‘Party in the Park was all about raising funds and awareness to improve the play park area.

‘It was brilliant to see the whole space being used and enjoyed. We are now really excited to get going on the next stage of planning, designing and securing funding.’

Carrie Starkie, treasurer of the group said: ‘ We raised £1,330, thanks to the amazing generosity of Lochaber folk.

‘So many people donated their time, equipment, expertise and enthusiasm. The list of volunteers is too long to give here, but we would like to say a particular thanks to Highland Council, No Fuss Events and Highland Wood Energy.’

Local Councillor Ben Thompson said: ‘It was fantastic to see so many happy, smiling faces at Party in the Park.

‘I am excited to see this project develop and I would encourage more people to step up to get involved with the great work already being carried out by Friends of Banavie Park.’
