Providing young people with skills to work towards a bright future

-

YOUNG people are being given the opportunity to gain valuable work experience, learn new skills and work towards national qualifications, through Argyll and Bute Council’s Modern Apprentices scheme.

Eleven local young people have been employed as Modern Apprentices with the council over the past year, with a further six at the recruitment stage and plans in place for up to ten additional posts.

Last year the council committed to providing at least 25 Modern Apprenticeships in Argyll and Bute’s major towns covering a broad range of skills and services – an exciting initiative from a major local employer. At their meeting on Thursday October 29, members of the council’s Policy and Resources Committee noted the success of the scheme and endorsed plans for the future, which include funding five driving lessons for eligible Modern Apprentices working towards obtaining a driving license, and to extend the age criteria for Modern Apprentices from 16-19 to 16-24.

The council’s Policy Lead for Human Resources, Councillor Dick Walsh, said: ‘Young people are the building bricks of Argyll and Bute, and the Modern Apprentice scheme gives them the skills, qualifications and confidence to help build a strong future for our communities.

‘I am sure that as well as gaining valuable skills and work experience, our Modern Apprentices will also prove to be a real credit to the council.

‘The council’s Single Outcome Agreement is committed to ensuring that young people have the best possible start, and that education, skills and training maximise opportunities for all.

‘It is fantastic that we are able to make this a reality for young people in towns all across Argyll and Bute.’

Modern Apprenticeships give young people the chance to earn while they learn. They provide the opportunity to gain invaluable work experience and work towards nationally recognised qualifications while earning a basic wage.

The Argyll and Bute Council Modern Apprentices are learning and earning across the spectrum of council services – from business administration to mechanics, from IT to customer services, and other council departments.

Modern Apprentice posts are advertised at Argyll and Bute Council’s page on the my job scotland website which you will find at www.myjobscotland.gov.uk / councils/argyll-bute- council
