Oban Camanachd prepares for the new shinty season

-

OBAN Camanachd start the build-up to season 2016 in the Marine Harvest Premiership with its traditional New Year game against a Camanachd veterans team.

The veterans team will be made up of some of the players who won the Scottish Cup 20 years ago on that memorable day in Inverness, defeating the all- conquering Kingussie team of that era 3-2 bringing the coveted trophy back to Oban for the first time since the successful Oban Celtic team of the 1960s. The game will take place at Mossfield Stadium, Oban, on Saturday January 9 with a 1pm throw-up. The game gives team manager Ian Hay the opportunity to field new signing Willie Neilson as well as welcoming back long-term injured players Andrew ‘Papa’ McCuish, Craig MacMillan and Keith MacMillan.

The veterans team will be managed by Lochside Rovers team manager Gareth Evans in what promises to be an entertaining game to be refereed by Billy Wotherspoon. After the match both teams will retire to Coasters for hospitality.

Oban Camanachd under 14 team coaches Stephen Sloss and Brian Logan are hopeful the long-awaited South Under 14 play- off game against Bute, scheduled for January, will finally take place and end season 2015. Oban Camanachd Club congratulates Oban Saints’ club secretary David Buchanan on his recent award of the British Empire Medal for services to football in the Queen’s New Year Honours List.
