Fort lose out to Buckie

Buckie Thistle 6 Fort William 2

IT WAS a poor start to 2016 for Fort William Football Club when they lost 6-2 to Buckie Thistle on Sunday.

The game, the first in three weeks for the Fort, was in doubt following rainfall over Moray but went ahead following a pitch inspection despite what were described as ‘appalling’ conditions.

Buckie took an early lead with a goal from Kevin Fraser in the 12th minute and continued with impressive football to give themselves at 5-1 lead at half time, with Scott Davidson scoring his first goal for Fort.

The second half was a closely-fought affair with a goal apiece in quick succession, from Iain MacLellan for Fort and Stuart Taylor scoring his second of the day for the home side.

Fort coach Kevin Munro said: ‘The first half was a real struggle for us. We were struggling for players, as a lot of teams are for festive games, and we had a really strong wind against us. We ended up 5-1 down at half time which was really disappointing. The second half was much better for us. We scored again and only let in one goal, which we shouldn’t have.’

Munro also praised newbies Conor MacPhee, Sean Leider and goal scorer Scott Davidson, for their performances on the day.

He said: ‘ These young boys are very promising and I look forward to seeing a lot more of them on the pitch.’

The Fort are back at home this Saturday, January 9, when they welcome Keith to Claggan Park. They hope to have a stronger squad, although they will be without captain Darren Quigg.
