South Uist fèis hailed a success

-

THE FIRST Hogmanay celebration by Gaelic heritage group Ceòlas has been hailed a great success.

Fèis Chullaig ran for three days from December 28 to January 1 and featured class tuition, music sessions, ceilidhs and archaeology walks in South Uist.

Classes, which were attended by locals and national and international visitors, were overseen by Ceòlas stalwarts Angus Nicolson, Allan Henderson and Sìneag MacIntyre.

Despite an initial blast of inclement weather delaying the arrival of some students and performers, the opening dance at Talla an Iochdair saw more than 170 people in attendance.

Likewise, early evening music sessions in local pubs were crowded with Uist residents, visitors and Ceòlas students. In addition to providing a lift to local firms, the fèis also dovetailed with other Uist events. The Old Year Cèilidh in Talla Staoinebrig was also a great success, with Ceòlas tutors adding to the talented line-up.

Commenting on the success of the inaugural fèis, Mary Schmöller, Ceòlas’ office manager, said: ‘The atmosphere was excellent and the numbers showed this is something that we can continue in future years.

‘Running community- orientated events such as this is so important for Ceòlas.’

Sìneag MacIntyre, Ceòlas tutor for Gaelic song from Cille Pheadair, added: ‘The fèis was such a great idea and I was so pleased that so many of the local community came to the classes at such a busy time of the year. It is amazing what Ceòlas does for the Uist community and long may it continue. Well done to all involved.’
