School pupils rewarded for community spirit

-

PUPILS at Kinlochleven high school have been rewarded with Saltire certificates for their voluntary work in the community.

Pupils put on a Christmas show, Glen of Thrones, which raised £2,000 for the community.

Everyone involved, from performers to make-up artists and stagehands, received a Saltire award.

Head teacher Rebecca Machin said: ‘It is only right and proper that our young people’s hard work is recorded and recognised through this government-supported award scheme. For a school as small as ours to have so many taking part is a great testament to the fabulous community spirit and enterprise we have here.’

Councillor Andrew Baxter presented the certificates and encouraged pupils to get involved in the new Walkers are Welcome initiative that encourages towns and villages to be walker friendly.

As part of the Get Set Community Action initiative, senior pupils decided before Christmas to make up hampers for older people in the community who might be struggling over the festive season.

Pupils donated gifts for the hampers and suggested people in the community they thought should receive one.

They made and distributed 20 hampers and raised more than £100 for Age UK.

One happy recipient sent a note which said: ‘It was lovely, not just to receive the gift, but for your young people to make the effort to deliver it themselves. They were so smartly dressed and had time to talk. They were so charming.’
