Fun for all at tag rugby festival held at Glencruitten

-

OBAN Lorne RFC hosted the seventh annual Oban and Lorn Tag Rugby Shield Festival at Glencruitten last Thursday.

The event, organised by rugby development officer Allan Wright in partnership with Oban and Lorn Active Schools co- ordinator Gillian Walker, attracted more than 200 primary 4-7 players from Rockfield, Park, St Columba’s, Easdale, Lochnell, Dunbeg, Barcaldine and Dalmally Primary Schools.

With the festival split into two age categories at P4/5 and P6/ 7, all teams took part in at least five group stage matches with the schools competing for a place in the semi finals.

The quality of the rugby improved over the course of the day with some entertaining high scoring matches on show.

The day came to a close first with the P4/5 final, which was contested between Park ‘A’ and Dunbeg. The Park team ran out 6-3 winners to claim the P4/5 shield despite a determined effort from Dunbeg.

In the P6/ 7 final Lochnell took on Easdale Primary, who reached the final for the first time. Easdale impressed with a 7-3 victory playing some of the best rugby of the day.

The winners and runners up were presented with their medals and shields by former Active Schools Co- ordinator Dale Kupris.

Hopefully the event will help convince the area’s primary players to join Oban Lorne’s growing mini rugby setup.

Despite the season coming to an end, training still continues every Wednesday evening from 6-7pm at Glencruitten.
