with the bigger Stuart Fletcher from Linwood.
Derbonovs leaves everything in the ring and is a real crowd pleaser and once he works on his defence will prove a real handful.
Scottish Champion Tyler Whyte showed great performance in his exhibition against Forgewood’s Kane Young.
Robbie Martin, 10, won his debut contest against Garnock Valley’s James Boyd. Martin boxed smartly and was well worth his win which will hopefully springboard him on to bigger things.
Lochaber’s youngest ever boxer took centre stage for the opening bout of the vending when nine-year- old Josh Deguno competed in a skills contest with Forgewood’s Troy Young. Scottish 2002 champion Cameron Whyte will participate in a box- off against the 2003-born champion Rhys Mitchell of Doon Valley Boxing Club next weekend to decide who represents Scotland in the GB Schoolboy championships in Manchester at the end of June.
Whyte is one of the most experienced boxers in his age group in Scotland having boxed for his country six times and reached the quarter finals of the European championships last year. On top of that he also won the Best Northern District Schoolboy Award for the season.
Training approximately 12 hours per week, everything will be geared not towards the boxoff but towards peaking at the GB finals themselves.
Club coach Charlie Anderson explained: ‘There’s no point in peaking three or four weeks before the actual event so you can’t reach those levels again. We’ll aim for a mini peak next weekend and if things go well drive forward for the end of June.’
Whyte will enjoy good quality technical sparring for his final preparations before the weekend with club team mates Ewan Easson, Robert MacDonald and Dan Nixon, who all box open class in their respective weight divisions.
