Pitch in to save Upper Achintore play area

-

FAMILIES in Upper Achintore are calling on ‘people power’ to save their pitch.

Wendy Lev from Banff Crescent took to the internet after hearing the Upper Achintore artificial pitch may be closing. The mum- of-three started an online petition which received more than 200 signatures overnight.

The petition now has more than 350 signatures.

Councillor Thomas MacLennan, leader of the Highland Council’s Lochaber committee, said the pitch was under review. He added: ‘ We just don’t have the money to maintain all these facilities. It may be closed. It’s an area zoned for housing. No decision has been taken yet, but it’s up for review.’

Ms Lev understands a meeting with the council is due to be arranged but a time or date had not been finalised as The Oban Times went to press. She continued: ‘ We are known as the outdoor capital of the world but a lot of families here cannot afford to take our kids climbing or canoeing.

‘I felt comfortable allowing my 10-yearold to head down there on her own. She could cycle down and enjoy being out in the fresh air with friends.

‘The park was always open and it was free - that is why it is so important to the people around here. I just hope if as many people take a stand maybe the council will listen and it’s not too late.’
